First lines

I expect that this one will be all over my reading list by morning, and I hit a really depressing bit of the book before crashing out last night and then waking up OMG STARVING at 1:30 in the morning.

This is on shuffle from my top rated, which coincidentally also contains my top played. First lines. Songs with no lyrics, lyrics not in English, and lyrics that give away the title in the first line have been skipped. (In the interests of me not having to sift through a truly ridiculous volume of music, there may be some repetitions of artist.)

Guess the title & artist (or an artist who's done it, since some have been covered). Comments are screened, but may be unscreened once they've all been guessed by somebody. Googling the lyrics is cheating; Googling to figure out if you were right after making your guesses is fair play.

Bonus #2: Ben Folds Five, "Army", and you may be listening to one of the acapella versions of it, in which case I'm guessing it's the NYU Mass Trasit version instead of the Virginia Gentlemen version, because the VG uses "Dad said, son, you must be high" instead.

2: You don't seem to have been mishearing, and I've edited, because LYRICS SITES ARE NEVER RELIABLE. However: "When you were languishing in rooms I built to file you in,
And when the wind set down in funnel form and pulled you in." Point for correct artist!

Full points for the other numbered ones, and a bonus point for "Army", which was the live version. Though I am pretty sure there are other versions bumping around my music folder, probably courtesy of you.

Bonus 1 is actually the late Alaska Senator Ted Stevens ranting about how the internet is a series of tubes, the techno remix.

You're old enough to have heard #11 when it was being played nonstop on gods-know-where, so it is entirely unsurprising.

This one has been showing up in my friends & reading lists for the last week or so already--apparently only in the parts that don't overlap with yours, then. :-) I like this kind of music meme.

I don't usually remember lyrics to any but my most favorite of favorite artists, so I only have answers for three of these:

At some point in my teenage years, I made a mix tape: "Finest Worktape". There is now a Pandora station: "Finest Workstation", of course.

I only recognise two of them - Forever Young (the version I hear is Laura Branigan's) and Circle in the Sand (Belinda Carlisle).

Forever Young is one of my favorites ever. I am learning about so many covers that I did not know existed.

I never know American pop culture references :/ The only one I know is In the town where I was born lived a man who sailed the sea - Yellow Submarine, Beatles.

I had to go through and figure out which ones I probably wouldn't have run into without having specifically been in the US at the time I was growing up. It turned out to be 5 of them. The rest of them I was introduced to through friends and internet. Though certainly being in the US influenced many of them as well.

synecdochic (either separately or collectively, on this one) are responsible for me knowing Army.

I think I would pick "Clint Eastwood" to describe certain bits of my college years. It's inextricably linked with my best friend and our quiet breakfasts together, which were interrupted by the noise from the TVs playing endless music videos.
