Not enough time to go around...

There was rain this morning. I woke up to rain and thunder. [livejournal.com profile] hcolleen peered outside to make sure no one was messing with the door, because that clearly wasn't rain!

I had a surreal dream involving Mad-Eye Moody, and JD, and the X-Files universe. (My brain insisted it was JD, but it was really Mulciber, because it had to be.) I think those two would fit in well in that universe. The part with the detachable body parts was WEIRD, and the snipers outside the blinds ... that was SCARY, and I woke up after seeing a laser-sight on me and diving out of the way like crazy.

[livejournal.com profile] hcolleen pointed out something that wasn't immediately apparent to US-educated yours truly: Harry's passed his OWLs. This means that he can up and quit school at any point in time without having the huge impact that a US high school student would have at dropping out before graduation. That makes Fred & George's maneuver a whole lot more understandable.

Users. *sigh* People you should not include in your bowling league's fit of dramatics: tech support. Seriously, guys. I should not have to support the results of two grown men electronically bitch-slapping each other.

I assume that 'OWLs' (which I've seen mentioned in the Harry Potter Wii game) are the equivalent of the old O-grades? (Which were replaced, in the real world, by Standard Grades by the time I - and Harry Potter - was in school.)

They don't count for a great deal. You really need your Highers if you want to get a decent job or go to uni.

How old are they when they take their 'OWLs'?

Fifth year would equate to Highers. A lot of people leave school after that - Highers are your entry qualifications to uni. Sixth year is either more Highers (some people have to do them over two years, some people just want lots of Highers) or more advanced courses that build on Highers (which are the equivalent to the first year of a degree course, academically).

So if they're a Higher equivalent, then leaving school after that is perfectly normal.

Wait..

The game is for the current movie - Harry Potter and the Order of the whatever. Is that book five? Aren't there two more after that?

The Scottish secondary education system only has six years, not seven. Is the last book set after he finishes school?

In that case, they probably start at 11 and finish at ~18, yes?

That would make them the equivalent of the old O-grades, which is what I'd guessed from the name. They're called 'Standard Grades' now, and aren't likely to get you into a good job, except some apprentice-type deals. It's not as bad as leaving US High School without graduating would be, though.
