Did I ever tell you guys about the only person who I felt was allowed to be bugnuts about chemtrails?

(Probably, but I’ll do it again anyway for the new people.)

Long ago, I was in Wilmington, NC for a book thing, and my husband ksonney and I made an overnight trip of it and were wandering around downtown, killing time. And we see a sign for something called “The Serpentarium.”

Now, I realize that most of you only know me via the parasocial internet, but you may have realized by now that I could no more pass up something called a Serpentarium than I could pass up oxygen. Fortunately Kevin is the same way. We head toward it.

My expectations are low. Like, Wilmington is a neat town, but far more likely to hold Discount Lion Safari than the San Diego Zoo, if you get me. And also I am jaded because my dad was a snake guy and I grew up with large boas roaming the house.

So I figure it’ll be, like, a room with a couple of common snakes in ten gallon aquariums, some hand-written cards, and maybe one big tank with a six-foot constrictor or something.

The front room does nothing to change this opinion. It is bare-bones with a desk.

We pay a surprisingly steep fee—I think it was $15 apiece, which is a lot for Discount Snake Safari, but hey, we’re committed now—and push open the double doors.

And we are suddenly transported.

Two story building, open in the middle, with a balcony of exhibits ringing the center. Massive tanks. Expensive lighting.

I walk up to the very first tank and it’s a goddamn bushmaster.

Next tank, king cobra. Next tank—fuck me, is that a mamba? Boomslangs, death adders, a taipan, they have EVERYTHING. Big, healthy, bright-eyed snakes in big, gorgeous tanks.

Ten kinds of rattlesnakes, coral snakes, you name it. Some non-venomous varieties too, but it’s obvious that the collector’s great love is the venomous guys.

Once I finish gibbering, I slow down and start reading the signs by the tanks.

The signage is professionally made but a trifle erratic. You kinda got to piece together the story. But the owner has, we learn, been bitten THREE TIMES by bushmasters.

(For non-snake people, this is kinda like surviving being hit by a train. Three times.)

On one of the bushmaster exhibits—there were multiple tanks—he did a minute by minute breakdown of what bushmaster venom felt like, while he was waiting for the helicopter to get to him.

It read a bit like a tasting menu at a very strange restaurant:

1 min - localized pain
2 min - hot flush
5 min - chills
—
8 min - vomiting
10 - loss of bowel control
——
30 min - disinterest in fate

(I may have the timing off on some of those, but “disinterest in fate” will stick with me forever.)

So Kevin and I spend like two hours, the only people in this unbelievably deadly museum, going from exhibit to exhibit and giggling hysterically because WTF IS THIS PLACE AND WHY HAS NO ONE HEARD OF IT?!

We are giddy. Drunk on venomous snakes. Finally we stagger back out into the lobby, and on the wall, two stories high, is a massive banner about THE DANGERS OF CHEMTRAILS

We stare at it for a minute. Somehow, due to the angles, we had missed it going in.

And finally I’m like “Look, once you’ve been bit by a bushmaster three fucking times, you’re allowed to be batshit. I’m amazed he’s still got organs left.”

And we leave.

But.

Years later, we are in Albuquerque, and our friends janelindskold and her husband take us to the Rattlesnake Museum. Which is small and quirky and delightful and had a tiny shrine to a Steve Irwin action figure. And I ask the guy behind the counter if he knows the Serpentarium.

“I know the owner’s wife murdered him,” he says casually.

I blink. I go to Google. And yes, some years after our visit, the owner was murdered by his wife. The collection was, alas, split up and sold—there is a huge saga there that you can look up—and the Serpentarium is no more.

And it’s a bit ironic that you can survive three bites from a snake with an 80% fatality rate and not another human. But I still stand by my statement, that after three bushmaster bites, you’re probably allowed to believe in any kooky-ass thing you want, and I won’t stop you.

Also his wife was found not guilty by reason of insanity, and the whole collection was left to a 4-year-old, whereupon the Fish & Wildlife Department was like “Oh HELL NO” and there was a whole saga with associated conspiracy theories. But you can find that for yourself.

ETA: Oh, ha, silly me, it wasn’t three bushmaster bites.

It was four.
